In 1979 the heavy summer monsoon rains caused the collapse of the river dam in Morvi. The failure of the dam was caused by excessive rain and massive flooding. The death toll has been estimated from 1800 to 25000 people. The Guinness Book of World Records listed the Morvi dam failure as the worst dam burst.

The 2008 floods caused by the summer monsoon in India were declared the worst in 50 years by the New York Times. The floods caused the Kosi River to breach its banks along the border of Nepal and form a new path through Bihar, India. More than 2 million were affected and 225,000 homes were destroyed. Around 2,000 people died from all the states.
